Alberta Hornsby – Director

Alberta was born in Hope Vale and now lives in Cooktown.

She was a founding member of the Hope Vale Arts & Culture Centre as well as a founding Director of UMI Arts. She co-ordinated the Cape York and Gulf Languages Program.

Alberta Aboriginal Heritage is important to her because it’s about connection to family through the land.  Language explains the relationship between my heritage, land, family & kin.

Language explains my roles and responsibilities within my family and in the wider society. Language explains my identity.

The NQRLC provides the opportunities and resources for our mob to research & learn language.  I believe that even though our people may never become fluent speakers of their language, it is still possible to gain the essence of one’s heritage and identity from knowing “a few words”.
